The Creative Cow

This is the first post in a three part "Cow" series.

In his book "Orbiting the Giant Hairball," Gordon MacKenzie has an interesting analogy for the tension between creativity and the demands of production. He describes a situation where there's a big guy in a business suit watching a cow chew her cud in a field. The businessman is outraged that the cow is not working hard at producing milk for him to sell. What he doesn't realize is that while the cow looks like it is doing nothing at all, in reality it is "performing the alchemy of transforming grass into milk."

Are you frustrated with the lack of satisfying productivity in your life? Go out in a field and chew some cud. Don't underestimate what MacKenzie calls "the quiet time essential to profound creativity." Don't be ashamed of being a creative cow.

This is probably my biggest pet peeve in the world: when Blogger doesn't put the spaces inbetween paragraphs, and there's nothing you can do about it. Oh, weeping and gnashing of teeth!
